Real-time monitoring technologies for indicator bacteria and pathogens in shellfish and shellfish harvesting waters

چکیده
The counting of bacteria in water has been a critical element in protecting public health in the last century. In the early part of the century scientists were able to grow many species of bacteria and differentiate them from each other using biochemical tests. They also had observed that certain bacteria were always found in the faeces of humans and other warm-blooded animals and that significant disease was also associated with faecal wastes. This association was recognized early on by the scientists who were the fore-runners of our present-day public health scientists. A bacterium originally called Bacillus coli

Components of microbiological monitoring programmes
Microbiological monitoring of bivalve mollusc production areas by national or regional authorities is usually undertaken as part of a programme to classify the areas according to the perceived risk of the presence of pathogenic microorganisms based on the concentrations of faecal indicator bacteria present in the area. The indicator bacteria used are generally of the coliform group: total colif...
متن کاملThe ability of algal organic matter and surface runoff to promote the abundance of pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Long Island Sound, USA
Food safety is a major concern in the shellfish industry, as severe illness can result from consuming shellfish that have accumulated waterborne pathogens. Shellfish harvesting areas are typically monitored for indicator bacteria such as fecal coliforms that serve as proxies for enteric pathogens although these indicators have shown little relation to some naturally occurring pathogenic bacteri...
متن کاملAssessment of Fecal Indicator Bacteria and Potential Pathogen Co-Occurrence at a Shellfish Growing Area
Routine monitoring of shellfish growing waters for bacteria indicative of human sewage pollution reveals little about the bacterial communities that co-occur with these indicators. This study investigated the bacterial community, potential pathogens, and fecal indicator bacteria in 40 water samples from a shellfish growing area in the Chesapeake Bay, USA. Bacterial community composition was qua...
متن کاملEnvironmental transmission of human noroviruses in shellfish waters.
Human noroviruses (NoV) are the most common cause of epidemic gastroenteritis following consumption of bivalve shellfish contaminated with fecal matter. NoV levels can be effectively reduced by some sewage treatment processes such as activated sludge and membrane bioreactors. However, tertiary sewage treatment and substantial sewage dilution are usually required to achieve low concentrations of...
متن کاملSuccessful detection of pathogenic Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli in shellfish, environmental waters and sediment using the ISO/TS-13136 method.
UNLABELLED The presence of highly pathogenic Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in shellfish, upstream waters and sediment from coastal shellfish sites was evaluated using the ISO/TS-13136 method. Shellfish (oysters, mussels and cockles), water and sediment samples were collected monthly over a period of 1 year. The method used real-time PCR detection of stx1, stx2 and eae genes and ...
